From: Anothereye, 13.06.2011
To: The cabbie who overtook me with only a 6" gap.
Date & time: Wednesday 11th May soon after 8pm.
Location: Northbound on Gordon Street, London WC1:
Dear Cabbie, I was cycling in a straight line, approx one metres distance from the row of parked cars on my left when you overtook me far to closely as a car was coming in the other direction. You claimed that I "pushed you out", not only did I not push you; I didn't touch you (though you were very close to touching me).
Am I right in assuming that you thought you had no choice but to pass me dangerously close? Were you not aware of another choice: to not overtake!
The Highway Code advises motorists to overtake cyclists with "at least as much space as you would give a car". This advice should be followed even if you think the cyclist is not positioned appropriately. Experienced cyclists usually pass parked cars with enough space to allow for a car door opening suddenly. If I had been felled by a car door in front of you there would have been blood on your cab!
